Frequently Asked Questions
When are tryouts and is attendance required?
Tryouts take place on Sunday, May 3rd. Attendance on this date is required to be considered for a competitive roster spot. If you cannot attend, you must contact us in advance to schedule a makeup session during the following week.
What should my player expect at tryouts?
Tryouts are structured like a training session to help players feel comfortable while still being evaluated. Players will go through a dynamic warm-up, technical drills, small-sided games, and full gameplay (7v7, 9v9, or 11v11 depending on age group). Coaches are assessing technical ability, game awareness, and coachability throughout.
How do the new age group changes affect my player?
U.S. Soccer has shifted age groups to align more closely with school grade rather than calendar year. This helps keep teams together long-term but may require some players (especially summer birthdays) to adjust teams. We will guide each family through the best placement decision.
How are teams selected and when will we hear back?
Players are evaluated by our coaching staff across the session. Team placement offers are sent within 48 hours of tryouts. To secure a spot, families must accept the offer and submit a deposit within that window.
What if my child doesn’t make a competitive team?
Not receiving a competitive offer does not mean the end of the pathway. We will recommend the best alternative, typically within our recreational program, so players can continue developing and re-evaluate for competitive in the future.
How often do competitive teams practice and play?
Competitive teams train 2x per week (60–90 minutes per session). Games are typically once per weekend.
SFYS Premier teams play locally in San Francisco
NorCal teams play regionally, with most games in SF and a few within ~1 hour driving distance
What are the different competitive levels?
We offer two primary competitive pathways:
SFYS Premier (city-based) – strong competition with minimal travel
NorCal (regional league) – higher competition with some travel and multiple tiers (Bronze → State Premier)
Players are placed based on readiness, commitment level, and long-term development.

My six year old daughter usually turned away from soccer. She enjoys being physically challenged: dance, gymnastics, and ariel type classes like bars, rings and silks and of course she loves crafts, crafts, crafts however no team sports, no soccer. I read through the summer camp offerings through OUSD. We were late to sign up, camps were filling up fast, offerings that appealed to my daughter were few. I read through the GLG program and gave soccer another shot. When I mentioned it was all girl's, she brightened up at the idea. My wife and I were hesitant. Would our daughter last eight hours at a soccer camp considering she's never really showed an interest? We signed up for one week, she wanted to go back, she didn't want it to end. We were fortunate enough to jump on openings for an additional two weeks. She loved the coaches, the soccer, the crafts, the friends. It's all true. The coaches are excellent! The program fosters positivity and confidence, yes in soccer, but also as a person in the world. An excellent program. GLG is amazing. Keep it going! - Loving Papa

GLG was so chill and welcoming to my brand-new soccer-playing daughter. She felt so at ease with Emily and the coaches. She really learned a lot of new soccer skills and enjoyed making bucket hats and bracelets. She made new friends, felt included, and supported by the culture.
