Few Spots Left, 2nd–7th Grade — Reach Out

Recreational isn't a lesser version of Competitive — it's the same 10-week technical and tactical progression (dribbling and ball control, building out of the back, passing and possession, defending, finishing, and finally game strategy and goal-setting), taught by the same caliber of coach, just paced for a social, once-a-week rhythm instead of a travel schedule.

This is also where the game grows up a little: a bigger field, a bigger ball, and her first introduction to goalkeeping — footwork, catching, distribution — on top of passing and possession skills that now stretch 10–40 yards, on the ground and in the air.

We don't chase scores at this level — but when a real curriculum meets real coaching, winning tends to follow. Our 2nd and 3rd grade Recreational teams have gone 8–1–0 on one practice a week over the last two seasons — not a lucky roster, but sustained development under this exact curriculum finally showing up on the scoreboard.

Why parents choose Recreational Soccer

  • One practice, one game a week — fits a family's schedule without swallowing the weekend
  • The same professional, all-female coaching staff and curriculum as our competitive program — held to the same bar: running a full 2nd–7th grade team and teaching real attacking, defending, and transition principles
  • Her first introduction to goalkeeping and full-field passing (10–40 yards, ground and air) — real next steps, not more of the same
  • Development that shows up in the win column, not just at practice

Where we typically play

SF SOL practices happen citywide — most often on Golden Gate Park turf and grass fields (Beach Chalet, Crocker Amazon, Big Rec, Polo Fields), Sunset District playgrounds (West Sunset, South Sunset), and neighborhood fields in the Marina, SOMA, Presidio, and Fillmore. SF Rec & Park assigns exact fields through an annual permit lottery, so specific locations shift somewhat from season to season — this map reflects where SF SOL teams have typically played.

Questions parents ask

Pulled from our full FAQ — the answers that come up most for this program.

What's the difference between Recreational and Competitive?
Both run on the same SF SOL curriculum. Recreational is once-a-week practice with weekend games — built for building skills, confidence, and friendships at a social pace. Competitive is twice-a-week practice with SFYS Premier or NorCal Premier League play — built for players ready for a higher level of commitment and tactical development. See Recreational Soccer and Competitive Soccer.
How often does her team practice and play?
It depends on her program: Micro is 1 practice/week plus weekend friendlies; Recreational is 1 practice/week plus weekend games; Competitive is 2 practices/week plus weekend league games. See each Programs page for specifics.
How do I order her uniform?
Through our official soccer.com Club Store — see Merch for the full step-by-step, including how to claim her jersey number first.
