Twice-a-week practices. Weekend league games. A 10-week curriculum that builds from attacking and defensive principles through full game strategy and tactics — and closes every season with players setting their own SMART goals for what comes next. This is where technical skill turns into tactical understanding, and where a good player starts thinking like a leader on the field.

Twice-weekly training buys time Recreational doesn't have yet: advanced attacking moves, real match vocabulary like thirds of the field and defensive compactness, and dedicated speed/agility and injury-prevention work built into the week.

It's working: our U9 and U10 Premier teams posted an 81%+ win rate last Fall season, both advancing to the Fall Championship. That's what a licensed, professional staff running a real system produces — the results repeat because the system does.

Why parents choose Competitive Soccer

  • Proven results, not a one-season fluke — Fall Championship qualifiers under this exact system
  • Twice-weekly training makes room for advanced tactics, real match vocabulary, and dedicated speed/agility and injury-prevention work — not just more of the same drills

Where we typically play

SF SOL practices happen citywide — most often on Golden Gate Park turf and grass fields (Beach Chalet, Crocker Amazon, Big Rec, Polo Fields), Sunset District playgrounds (West Sunset, South Sunset), and neighborhood fields in the Marina, SOMA, Presidio, and Fillmore. SF Rec & Park assigns exact fields through an annual permit lottery, so specific locations shift somewhat from season to season — this map reflects where SF SOL teams have typically played.

Questions parents ask

Pulled from our full FAQ — the answers that come up most for this program.

What's the difference between Recreational and Competitive?
Both run on the same SF SOL curriculum. Recreational is once-a-week practice with weekend games — built for building skills, confidence, and friendships at a social pace. Competitive is twice-a-week practice with SFYS Premier or NorCal Premier League play — built for players ready for a higher level of commitment and tactical development. See Recreational Soccer and Competitive Soccer.
What's the difference between SFYS Premier and NorCal Premier — and why do they cost different amounts?
Both are competitive league play on the same SF SOL curriculum and coaching staff. SFYS Premier is San Francisco's local competitive league ($1,200/season); NorCal Premier is regional league play with more travel and a higher level of competition ($1,350–$1,450/season — those figures already include the league fee, since NorCal registration runs through SF SOL). Which one fits depends on her ambition — coaches help place her at tryouts.
How often does her team practice and play?
It depends on her program: Micro is 1 practice/week plus weekend friendlies; Recreational is 1 practice/week plus weekend games; Competitive is 2 practices/week plus weekend league games. See each Programs page for specifics.
How do I order her uniform?
Through our official soccer.com Club Store — see Merch for the full step-by-step, including how to claim her jersey number first.
Do I need to try out for every program?
No — only Competitive team placement (SFYS Premier and NorCal Premier) requires tryouts. Micro, Recreational, and Camps are open registration. See Tryouts for the Competitive process.
Who runs the tryouts?
The same licensed, professional coaches who'll run her practices all season — not a stranger with a clipboard she'll never see again. Tryouts are the start of a relationship with her coaches, not a one-time evaluation.
