Meet Loni Brewer, SF SOL's New Director of Coaching & Player Development

What "Director of Coaching & Player Development" actually means

The title does two things at once, on purpose. The "Coaching" half is built on top-down mentorship: Loni isn't tied to one specific team, but rather works to elevate our entire coaching staff. By observing and participating in sessions, delivering direct feedback, and establishing a unified standard of excellence, she equips our coaches to drive success across the entire club. The "Player Development" half is why that matters: a better-coached staff is how individual players actually progress, season over season. Coach the coaches, and the players get better as a direct result — that's the whole idea behind pairing these two words in one title.

A Proven Track Record in Bay Area Soccer

Loni brings more than twelve years of coaching, leadership, and program experience to SF SOL, built across some of the most respected youth soccer organizations in the Bay Area. She's coached advanced regional players for NorCal Premier's Player Development Program, led JV and Varsity soccer at San Francisco University High School, served as Girls Grassroots Director and Head Coach at San Francisco Elite Academy, and shaped early-childhood soccer programming at SF Tots — a coaching path that runs from toddlers just learning to kick a ball all the way to top-level competitive teens.

That growth mindset shows up in real results, too. At San Francisco Elite Academy, she took her 2013s team from Silver Champions at the MVLA Fall Cup to Gold Champions the very next season — the kind of jump she credits to her players' "dedication and hard work," reflecting the steady development she'd been building in them all along.

She's not new to us, either. Loni coached with us before, back when we were known as GLG, and we're thrilled to welcome her home in this new role. She also holds a USSF B License, an advanced credential held by a very small number of female soccer professionals in the Bay Area, and her recent years coaching locally give her real familiarity with our competitive landscape — the leagues, the level of play, and what it actually takes to compete here.

What drives her approach comes down to one idea: build a positive, growth-driven environment where players develop technically and tactically together, while learning a real respect for the game itself. This is the same philosophy she's carried through more than a decade of coaching, and it's now the standard she's setting for every coach on SF SOL's staff.

One pathway, kindergarten through high school and beyond

What makes Loni's background particularly valuable here is her range. Her coaching experience runs from introductory, small-sided environments all the way up to advanced NorCal-level competitive programs — the same full span SF SOL's own pathway is built on, from See It (Micro Soccer) through Own It (Recreational) to Lead It (Competitive, SFYS Premier and NorCal Premier). A coach who's only ever worked one level teaches to that level. This aligns directly with our vision: offering players an environment where they can learn, love the game, and continuously evolve all the way to college. It's our way of ensuring that the promises we make to our families match the everyday experience on the field, keeping player growth at the center of everything we do.

Real accountability, club-wide

Part of this role isn't about any single practice at all — it's about building a real system for tracking whether the club's coaching is actually working. Loni is bringing a data driven, systems-thinking approach to how SF SOL supports its coaches, teams, and players: tracking tangible progress rather than relying on instinct alone, so the club can see where a team needs a different focus, or where a coach needs more support, well before a season goes by unnoticed. That's the difference between a club that talks about accountability and one that's actually built to check — and it's a big part of how we get SF SOL to the next level.
