National Women’s Soccer League Expands to the Bay Area: “Sport as a Vehicle for Change”

USWNT veterans Brandi Chastain, Leslie Osborne, Danielle Slaton, and Aly Wagner are bringing the NWSL its 14th team, which will begin play in 2024. Alongside these four USWNT legends is Sixth Street, a leading investment firm with sports experience. Northern California has been vital in generating women’s soccer talent and success. The new expansion team will continue this Northern California legacy and bring professional women’s soccer to a vibrant and diverse Bay Area.

Bringing the NWSL to the Bay Area is a significant investment in women’s sports. Sixth Street will bring institutional expertise and is making the most important investment in women’s professional soccer with this new expansion team. Sixth Street and the Founding Four are stepping into a new reality of women’s sports with the perfect backdrop of the Bay Area.

At the club level, GLG contributes to the Northern California soccer legacy by encouraging girls and women in sports to play competitively throughout the Bay Area. Competitive play and communities are central stepping stones to improvement in the sport, whether at the collegiate or professional level. As our CEO and Founding Director Bre Russell said in an interview for ABC 7, “Sport is a vehicle for change [and equity],” making the new NWSL team a tremendous motivator and an opportunity for GLG players and coaches to have at their front door.

GLG contributes to the advancement of women in soccer year-round. Part of creating and nurturing competitive environments is ensuring that all players can interact and contribute to the sport. As always, GLG will offer Summer Camp opportunities around the Bay Area. Click here to try out for one of our competitive teams, join a team, or sign up for a summer camp!
