International Day of the Girl - October 11, 2020
On Sunday October 11th we celebrate International Day of the Girl. This movement began at the 1995 World Conference on Women in Beijing where countries adopted the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. The Beijing Declaration is the first to specifically call out girls’ rights and to recognize the unique challenges girls face around the world.
In 2011 the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to declare October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child. This has helped further the impact of the Beijing Declaration and address the challenges of girls, encourage girls to become future leaders, and to fulfill their human rights.
At Girls Leading Girls we believe young girls will become the change-makers of tomorrow and we work to give girls and women the skills to do so.
“As adolescent girls worldwide assert their power as change-makers, International Day of the Girl 2020 will focus on their demands to:
Live free from gender-based violence, harmful practices, and HIV and AIDS
Learn new skills towards the futures they choose
Lead as a generation of activists accelerating social change”
