Celebrating Trailblazers: Black Women Making History in Soccer

As we honor Black History Month, we want to acknowledge the remarkable contributions of black women who have broken barriers, shattered stereotypes, and made history on and off the soccer pitch.

Starting with our very own coach and professional soccer player, Sydney Shepard! Read her incredible story and how she is making an impact through GLG, Oakland SOUL Women's team, and beyond.

Sydney Shepard

“Growing up in Danville, a predominantly white area, and playing soccer, a predominantly white sport in the U.S. due to its pay to play system, I felt isolated from my peers in many ways. Not just because I was the only person that looked like me, but also because I was the only one that had known and lived the Black experience, which for me had been heightened by my living and playing environment.

Although my experience in childhood felt a bit lonely at times, I found ways to connect with my peers, and learned skills to highlight my individual qualities, such as leadership.

As a center back, I focused on leadership through communicating and organizing my team. Additionally, fully embracing these qualities not only helped me to become a better soccer player, but also helped me to reach alignment with my greatest self by embracing, practicing, and fulfilling these characteristics.

As a GLG coach, it's been incredible for me to see soccer have the same impact for the girls as it had for me.

Since soccer still remains difficult to access because of how expensive it is in the U.S., it's important to provide Black girls in predominantly Black areas to utilize the sport as a tool to find their own personal qualities and characteristics that can be highlighted through sport, and have fun doing so!

It’s been so incredible seeing young Black and Brown girls discovering themselves through sport, and learning new skills to hone in on their newfound talent. Introducing soccer and thereby exposing their own incredible qualities has been so amazing to see, and continues to inspire me to do what I love most, which is playing and enjoying the game.

Furthermore, I’ve been thrilled to enjoy a full circle moment in my own journey, utilizing my leadership skills learned through soccer, and applying them as a coach to help the girls do the same.”

Crystal Dunn

Crystal Dunn's versatility and skill have made her a standout player for both the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) and the United States Women's National Team. Dunn's journey exemplifies resilience and determination, redefining success on her terms. Beyond her on-field prowess, Dunn has been an advocate for racial equality and justice, using her platform to bring about positive change.

Smith made history by becoming the first overall pick in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) draft, selected by the Portland Thorns FC in 2019. Her speed, agility, and goal-scoring ability quickly garnered attention, making her one of the most promising young talents in women's soccer. Smith continues to inspire the next generation of female athletes, emphasizing the importance of hard work, perseverance, and a love for the game.

From awe-inspiring performances on the pitch to advocacy for equality and representation, these athletes are paving the way for a more inclusive and diverse future in sports. May their stories inspire us all to strive for greatness, challenge stereotypes, and support the continued progress of black women in soccer and beyond.
