Meet Coach Mariyam!

Coaches Corner- Mariyam!

What is your soccer story? 

I grew up in Oakland, CA and started playing soccer because my older sister who I looked up to played. I took a five year break then continued playing soccer in middle school and my passion for it returned. Soccer has always given me the confidence I’ve needed to succeed in other areas of my life!

To me, soccer has meant learning to fall and get back up again and again, working cohesively with a team to accomplish a goal, and pushing myself to improve in any and everything I do.

Favorite Soccer Position? 

My favorite position to play is center back because it is the last line of defense before the goalie and it takes a lot of technique to play.

How did you end up at GLG?

I am currently studying biology at Mills College in Oakland, CA. Coach Bre reached out to me about coaching in the after school programs in Oakland and it seemed like a great opportunity for me to continue to have soccer in my life while still being able to balance school and work. 

What is your superpower? 

My superpower is listening! I’ve been told I’m a great listener so I use it like a superpower. 

Award Winner!

Mariyam recently received an Education Award as an Up2Us Sports Americorps Coach. This education grant will be disbursed to Mariyam after completing a year of working with them coaching through GLG and other sports related programs. Congrats Mariyam!
